The Pet Trade Association of Greece has asked the Government for reduced VAT rates on dog and cat food, due to the current financial distress which is now even worse considering the war in Ukraine. The prices of both dry and canned food are expected to rise up to (or even exceed) an additional 30% for dry food and 45% for canned within the next three months.
Pet owners always experience financial hardships in order to provide for their pets. Also it is speculated that there will be a huge wave of abandonments because some owners lack the sense of empathy. In addition, the animal rescue centers as well as some animal-loving people who tend to take care of multiple strays have reached the point of not being able to afford their necessary feeding expenses. Furthermore Municipalities are reluctant to helping, due to the high cost of food. The Pet Trade Association of Greece strongly believe that a VAT reduction will be nothing but beneficial for the consumers, the entrepreneurships and also for the state. It is our ethical duty to provide the basic necessities for our pets, since they are considered equal members of our families.
